  • How to Choose a Diamond: Understanding the 4Cs

    Aug 5, 2026

Choosing a diamond is one of the most meaningful decisions you'll make. Whether you're selecting a stone for an engagement ring or a treasured gift, understanding the four key quality factors — known as the 4Cs — will give you the confidence to choose a diamond that's truly exceptional. At Ryan James Jewellery, our master jeweller will guide every client through this process personally, ensuring your diamond reflects your vision and values.

    Cut: The Most Important C

Of all the 4Cs, cut has the greatest influence on a diamond's beauty. Cut doesn't refer to the shape of the diamond (round, oval, pear, etc.) — it refers to how precisely the stone has been faceted to interact with light. A well-cut diamond will appear brilliantly bright and full of fire; a poorly cut stone will look dull, even if it has excellent colour and clarity.

Cut is graded from Excellent through to Poor. For an engagement ring centrepiece, we always recommend an Excellent or Very Good cut — the difference in sparkle is immediately visible to the naked eye.

    Colour: The Subtlety of White

Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow or brown). The most prized diamonds are colourless, as they allow the most light to pass through and create that iconic white sparkle.

In practice, diamonds in the D–F range are considered colourless, G–J near-colourless, and K–M faintly coloured. For most settings, a G or H colour diamond offers an excellent balance of quality and value — the slight warmth is virtually invisible once set in a ring, particularly in yellow or rose gold.

    Clarity: Nature's Fingerprints

Almost all diamonds contain tiny natural inclusions (internal characteristics) or blemishes (surface marks) formed during their creation deep within the earth. Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) — no inclusions visible under 10x magnification — down to Included (I1–I3), where inclusions may be visible to the naked eye.

For most buyers, a VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included) or SI1 (Slightly Included) diamond offers excellent value. Inclusions at these grades are typically invisible without magnification, and the savings can be redirected toward a better cut or larger carat weight.

    Carat: Size Isn't Everything

Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, not its size — though the two are closely related. One carat equals 0.2 grams. While carat weight significantly influences price, a smaller diamond with an excellent cut can appear larger and more brilliant than a heavier stone with a poor cut.

The ideal carat weight depends on the wearer's hand size, the ring setting, and your budget. Our jewellers can show you a range of stones side by side so you can see exactly how different weights look in person.

    Putting It All Together

The 4Cs work together — no single factor tells the whole story. The best approach is to prioritise cut above all else, then find the right balance of colour, clarity, and carat for your budget. Every diamond we source at Ryan James Jewellery is hand-selected and accompanied by a grading certificate from a recognised gemological laboratory.
